Getting Your Amateur Radio License
Earning your "ticket" (license) is the first step into the world of ham radio. The process is straightforward: you study the material and pass a supervised exam to prove you understand basic regulations and safety.
Two Ways to Take Your Exam
You can choose the testing environment that makes you feel most comfortable:
Online Remote Testing: Take your exam from the comfort of home. You will connect with a team of Volunteer Examiners via a video call (Zoom). They will check your ID and monitor your room via webcam while you complete the test on your computer.
In-Person Testing: Many local radio clubs host "test sessions" at libraries, community centers, or fire stations. This is a great way to meet local hams in your area and take the test in a traditional classroom-style setting.

Every beginner starts with the Technician Class exam. Here is what to expect:

What You Will Need
Note: The FCC requires all applicants to have an FCC Registration Number (FRN) before sitting for an exam. This protects your Social Security number and allows the FCC to track your license.
